Our home, Asoura, is a fishing town that has persisted for generations, where we are proud to live in gratitude for the blessings of the sea.
As time went by, however, the presence of young people has gradually faded from the town.
Indeed, this town too is facing the same challenge as many in the countryside of Japan.

So then, what is it that still remains in the countryside?
The sea, nature, food, and the ties between people.
It was our belief that such "ordinary" things, so rooted in our daily lives, could serve as new value in the coming time.
We started the guesthouse as fishermen working on the sea, to pass onto the next generation the wisdom and sensibilities of a life lived alongside nature.

Origin of the Name "MARUKINMARU"

It is customary for fishermen in Japan to end their boat names with "-maru" (Japanese for "circle"), in order to pray for a safe trip in and return from the sea.
"Marukinmaru" is also the name of our fishing boat.
As we struggled to determine the shape we wanted this place to take, we were struck by an important realization.
That we wanted this place to be somewhere our customers could always come back to— somewhere they might drop by again, even just on a whim.
We named this place MARUKINMARU because we wanted it to be somewhere that can welcome people in this way, again and again.
